Youth Garden Project
From Soil to Success: Growing Futures with Smart Agriculture
The Youth Garden Project by Youths for Today and Tomorrow (YTT) transforms idle land into thriving gardens that feed families, generate income, and empower young people to fight food insecurity. In Matobo and Tsholotsho, where rainfall is low and job opportunities are scarce, these gardens are more than just plots of soil—they are green lifelines of hope and change.
The Challenge
Young people in rural Zimbabwe grapple with:
- Food Insecurity: Low rainfall and poor soils threaten access to fresh, nutritious food.
- Unemployment: With few economic opportunities, youth are left idle and vulnerable to negative coping mechanisms.
- Climate Change: Droughts and changing weather patterns further worsen already fragile livelihoods.
Our Intervention
The Youth Garden Project equips young people with tools to combat these challenges:
- Climate-Smart Agriculture Training: Youth learn crop rotation, organic farming, and water-efficient irrigation methods
- Solar-Powered Community Gardens: Renewable energy supports sustainable irrigation in dry regions.
- Hands-On Learning: Participants grow vegetables like spinach, tomatoes, and cabbage for both family nutrition and community markets.
- Market-Oriented Production: Youth are taught not just how to grow food but how to sell surplus produce for income.
One inspiring example is the Lahlingubo Youth Garden in Matobo Ward 1, which has become a hub of nutrition, income, and empowerment.

The Impact
This project has brought visible change:
- Improved Nutrition: Families now have regular access to fresh vegetables
- Income Generation: Surplus produce is sold locally, supporting household needs like school fees and healthcare.
- Community Empowerment: Gardens are youth-run, fostering leadership, teamwork, and ownership.
- Climate Change Adaptation: Solar-powered irrigation and smart farming methods reduce the risk of crop failure.
As one participant proudly said: “This garden doesn’t just feed us, it feeds our dreams.”
Looking Ahead
YTT is committed to scaling up youth gardens across Matabeleland, creating a network of climate-smart green spaces run by and for young people. With more resources, these projects can expand to feed more communities, reduce poverty, and create a greener tomorrow
